Weston occupies the southern part of the Isle of Portland, on the same solid limestone plateau as Easton and Southwell. Rock close to the surface means shallow drainage runs with limited cover, difficult excavation, and very little scope for conventional soakaways, since there is rarely enough permeable soil above the stone to disperse water into.

Housing is largely stone-built terraces and post-war development served by clay pipework at shallow depth, and flat runs with low cover are prone to repeat silting and displaced joints. The exposure of this coast matters too: heavy driven rain runs straight off hard limestone and paved surfaces with almost no absorption, so gullies and surface-water systems surcharge during storms, and salt-laden conditions accelerate deterioration of older metalwork and covers.
