Weymouth's drainage is defined by sea level. The town centre, harbourside and Melcombe Regis sit barely above high water, and gravity sewers there cannot discharge freely when the tide is in, so slow drainage and gully surcharge tend to follow a tidal pattern rather than appear at random. Much of that older core still runs on Victorian clay and in places combined pipework laid when the resort expanded, which takes foul water and rainwater in the same run and surcharges quickly during heavy summer downpours.

Radipole and the low ground around the lake and the Wey add a second factor: a permanently shallow water table in soft alluvial deposits. Where joints have opened, groundwater enters the pipe instead of foul water leaving it, filling the network with clean water and steadily washing silt into the invert. Higher ground at Preston, Littlemoor and Southill sits on Corallian limestone and clay with mostly post-war clay-to-plastic pipework, better falls and fewer tidal problems, though shared private drain runs between properties are common.
