Drainage Services Across Berkshire

Berkshire runs from dense Victorian and Edwardian housing in Reading, Slough and Windsor out to gravel-terrace villages along the Thames and Kennet. Riverside drainage in Berkshire has one dominant characteristic: a high water table that rises quickly after prolonged rain, and drains that cannot discharge freely when the rivers are up.

Where groundwater sits above the pipe invert, every open joint and hairline crack becomes an entry point. That infiltration fills the system with clean water, overloads pumping stations and turns a minor defect into repeated flooding in Caversham, Purley, Wraysbury and Datchet. Older Reading terraces still share single private drain runs between several houses, so one blockage affects a whole row, and the mature street trees that give those roads their character are a routine source of root ingress into clay pipework. On the Thames gravels, soakaways often work well; on the London Clay to the east around Slough they frequently do not, and undersized surface-water systems back up during storms.
