Swanage sits in a bowl between Purbeck limestone and Wealden clay, with much of the town on steep ground falling to the bay. The gradients mean long, fast runs that scour high up and deposit silt where the fall flattens near the seafront, and the older Victorian clay drainage in the town centre and around the quay is where most of those deposits accumulate.

Geology changes over short distances here. On the limestone at Durlston and Langton Matravers ground is hard, drainage runs are often shallow with limited cover, and soakaways can work well or hit rock at little depth.
