Easton sits on the limestone plateau of the Isle of Portland, and the geology dominates everything about drainage here. Solid Portland stone lies at or near the surface across much of the village, so pipework was often laid shallow with limited cover, and any new excavation means breaking rock rather than digging soil. Traditional soakaways are frequently impractical because there is no depth of permeable soil to build them in.

The stone-built terraces around Easton and Wakeham, many of them quarry workers' housing, run on old clay drainage at shallow depth beneath narrow streets and yards, where joints are easily displaced and blockages recur in flat, low-cover runs.
