Drainage Services in Hythe

Hythe faces Southampton Water across the estuary, and the shoreline strip through Hythe and Dibden lies low enough that tidal levels affect how freely drainage discharges. At high water outfalls are restricted, so slow drainage and gully surcharge near the waterfront follow the tide rather than indicating a blockage in the pipe.

Ground here is a mix of river terrace gravels, alluvium near the shore and clay inland, with a shallow water table close to the water and free-draining gravel further back. Older pipework along the waterfront is clay, and open joints admit groundwater and fine sediment that silts the invert. Dibden Purlieu, Holbury and Fawley grew substantially post-war, partly around the refinery and its workforce, with clay-to-plastic separated systems on flat ground and shallow gradients. Towards Beaulieu and the forest edge many properties are off-mains on septic tanks, discharging in an area of protected habitat where standards are strict.

High-pressure jetting clears silt from flat, low-gradient runs near the shore, no-dig lining repairs damaged pipework without excavating constrained waterside plots, and off-mains systems are designed from measured percolation to meet the General Binding Rules.
