Hastings Old Town sits in a narrow valley between sandstone cliffs, and its dense, historic drainage network includes some very old combined sewers that carry both foul and surface water down toward the seafront. Sandstone bedrock here is generally free-draining, but the steep gradients mean surface water can arrive quickly after heavy rain, testing pipework that in places predates modern building regulations.
