Drainage Services Across East Sussex

East Sussex combines Regency and Victorian seaside towns — Brighton, Hove, Eastbourne, Hastings and Bexhill — with Wealden villages on heavy clay and chalk downland behind the coast.

Brighton's Victorian sewer network, tunnelled through chalk from the 1860s, is a genuine feat of engineering, but the housing connected to it is equally old: deep basement flats, shared private drains between converted terraces and long clay runs beneath narrow streets. Chalk gives good percolation but also fast, uncontrolled groundwater response, and winter rainfall can push the water table up into drainage systems along the spring line. On the Weald clay around Uckfield, Heathfield and Battle, shrink-swell movement cracks pipe joints and soakaways rarely work without proper design. Coastal properties face salt corrosion, shingle and sand ingress and outfalls that are tide-locked at high water. Steep cliff-top and hillside sites at Hastings add erosion and ground movement to the list.
