Drainage Services in Gosport

Gosport occupies a flat peninsula between Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent, and almost all of it lies close to sea level. Tidal influence is therefore a routine factor rather than an occasional one: gravity sewers cannot discharge freely at high water, so slow drainage and gully surcharge in Hardway, Elson and the harbour-side streets often follow the tide rather than any internal fault.

The older town and Alverstoke run on Victorian clay drainage, some combined, laid shallow in ground with a permanently high water table. Open joints there admit groundwater and fine beach sand, which silts the invert and creates voids around the pipe — a common survey finding across the peninsula. Bridgemary and Rowner, largely post-war estates, use clay and plastic pipework with separated systems, but the terrain is so flat that gradients are shallow throughout and debris settles readily.
