Bristol's drainage is among the oldest and most layered in the south west. The city grew as a port from the medieval period onwards, and its sewer network was substantially built out in the Victorian era on top of culverted rivers — the Frome was famously covered over through the city centre, and dozens of smaller watercourses now run in brick culverts beneath streets and buildings.

That history explains the fault pattern. Combined Victorian sewers in Bedminster, Easton, St Pauls and Totterdown carry both foul and surface water, so they surcharge in storms. Brick and clay pipework of that age fails at mortar joints, and Bristol's steep topography — Clifton, Kingsdown, Redland — means high-velocity flows scour some sections while flat runs near the harbourside silt up. Mature street trees along the Victorian avenues push roots into any open joint. Closer to the Avon and the Floating Harbour, tide-locked outfalls and a high water table cause groundwater infiltration and slow-draining systems. Conversions of large Victorian houses into flats add loading to drains never designed for six kitchens and bathrooms.
