Coventry was heavily bombed in 1940 and rebuilt at speed, so a great deal of its drainage dates from the late 1940s and 50s and is now at the end of its intended life — including pitch-fibre pipework that flattens and collapses, and runs laid over rubble and made ground that has continued to settle. Surviving Victorian terraces in Earlsdon, Stoke and Foleshill still use combined sewers and shared clay drains prone to root ingress. Solihull's interwar and post-war suburbs sit largely on Mercia Mudstone and glacial clays with seasonal shrink-swell movement, and many properties rely on soakaways that have silted up over sixty years. The River Sherbourne, culverted beneath central Coventry, adds hidden surface-water infrastructure of variable condition.
