Southend sits above the Thames Estuary on London Clay, and its position on the coast means many properties, especially those close to the seafront in Westcliff and Chalkwell, contend with a naturally high water table that can slow gravity drainage and increase pressure on ageing combined sewers during high tides and heavy rain together.
