Rugby developed rapidly around its railway works from the mid-19th century, and the terraced housing from that era near the town centre and Hillmorton typically runs on combined clay sewers laid over Lias clay and mudstone. This ground holds water well, so during heavy rain the surrounding water table rises and can slow drainage in low points, particularly near the Oxford Canal and the River Avon where gardens back onto watercourses.
