Minehead is built where Exmoor drops steeply to the Bristol Channel, and that produces two very different drainage zones within a small town. Higher Town and the hillside above run on steep, fast-falling pipework that scours at the top, while the seafront and the flat ground behind it sit low against a coast with one of the largest tidal ranges in the world, so outfalls there are strongly tide-influenced and cannot discharge freely at high water.
