Milton Keynes was built from the late 1960s onward, so the vast majority of its drainage is modern uPVC pipework laid to a planned grid, generally separating foul and surface water and feeding the network of balancing lakes that dot the city. Ground conditions vary from Oxford Clay to river gravels along the Great Ouse and its tributaries, and the older villages absorbed into the new town, such as Woughton and Woolstone, still carry some Victorian and inter-war clay runs that predate the master plan.
