Drainage Services in Cardiff Bay

Cardiff Bay covers the old docklands around the mouth of the Taff and Ely rivers, where Victorian dock-worker terraces in Butetown and Grangetown sit on reclaimed and low-lying ground with combined clay drainage from the industrial era, while the regenerated waterfront apartments and offices built since the 1990s use modern separate foul and surface water systems, often incorporating attenuation to manage the flat, low-lying site.

The construction of the Cardiff Bay Barrage changed water levels across the old tidal dock area, and the reclaimed and made-up ground around the bay means drainage gradients are often shallow, so silt and debris can settle in older pipe runs rather than flushing through naturally. Some older combined sewers in Butetown and Adamsdown can be sensitive to surcharge during intense rainfall given the flat terrain.

We use CCTV survey to establish pipe material and gradient before recommending any work, since dockland ground here varies from reclaimed fill to natural river silt. High-pressure jetting is effective at clearing the silt build-up common on shallow-gradient runs near the bay, and no-dig relining lets us repair older clay or displaced modern pipe without disrupting waterfront developments or historic dock-area streets.
